ARTIST STATEMENT
My sculptural ceramic practice explores themes of joy, connection, and the quiet poetry of the natural world. Native birds and flowers are central to my work. I use birds as intermediaries between the human and natural realms, allowing them to carry stories, emotions and moments of wonder across those boundaries.
This body of work has been a genuinely joyful exploration of perspective and how we each see the world. I have used ceramic vessels as both sculptural forms and symbolic containers. Many of the works draw inspiration from ancient vessel shapes traditionally used to hold essential materials, knowledge, and cultural meaning. By referencing these forms, I look back with respect to what has come before, while reinterpreting tradition through contemporary surface decoration.
Each vessel represents a different perspective shaped by introspection and lived experience. Some surfaces break into mosaic-like patterns, echoing the way perception is often layered, fragmented, and slowly formed over time. In other pieces, I weave natural fibres into the clay, bringing softness, movement, and a sense of gentle disruption to the solidity of the ceramic.
Surface plays an important role in how the work communicates. Pattern, texture, and material invite you to move around each piece and spend time with it. As a collection, the works suggest that perspective itself can be understood as a vessel—one that holds memory, experience, and personal interpretation.
I hope you enjoy spending time with the work, and perhaps find space for your own reflections within it, as much as I enjoyed making it.
